How to add an editor to your Facebook business page

I work with a lot of small to mid-sized businesses who typically need assistance in giving me permission to manage their Facebook page.  I decided to put together a tutorial to help them, or anyone else for that matter, give 3rd-party access to business Facebook pages.

Before you start, there are a few things to know:

  • Every business page is linked to a personal profile. You must have a personal profile in order to own or manage a business page.
  • Do not give your personal login and password to someone that you want to manage your Facebook page.  Simply assign them a role as outlined below.
  • When you give Facebook access to a 3rd party, you can give Admin, Editorial, Moderator, Advertiser, or Analyst access.  I would recommend AGAINST giving Admin control to anyone other than the owners of the company or those that need it for their job duties.  Admin control allows those with that role to manage all aspects of the page including who else has access to the page. Furthermore, if you are a business owner and you have had someone else initially set up your Facebook page, make sure that you have admin access.  I have worked with many business owners and key marketing people who lost access their social media because either someone left the company that had sole access or they were locked out of their account by someone abusing their Admin rights.

Ok, now to show you how to give Facebook access using page roles...

1. Go to your Facebook Business Page.
2. At the top on the right you will see "Settings".  This will be below the blue bar.  Click Settings.
2. After you click settings, another page will come up.  Click on "page roles".
3. Once page roles comes up, type in the name of the person that you want to give access to and determine the level of access.
In order to give access, you must confirm the following:
  • The person likes this Page, or is your friend on Facebook.
  • The person doesn't already have a role on this Page.
  • You have permission to look up the person on Facebook.
  • You entered a valid email address that's associated with their Facebook account.

There you have it!  Easy breezy, right?  As always, please let me know if you have any questions.
